Access to quality animal health services remains a major constraint to livestock productivity in many parts of Nigeria, particularly in rural and underserved communities. To address this challenge, various organisations and development actors are implementing various community-based service delivery models, including the Community Animal Health Workers
(CAHWs), Veterinary Paraprofessionals (VPPs), and Community Agro-Veterinary Entrepreneurs (CAVEs). However, approaches have often operated and evolved independently, resulting in varying standards, training systems, and regulatory arrangements.
For most of his life, Aliyu Ismail believed farming should not end when the rains stopped. But for over three decades, unpredictable seasons, high cost of fuel-powered irrigation stood as a barrier to his vision of producing food year-round. Today, standing near his solar-powered irrigation pump, that ambition has become reality. What was once a struggle to keep his farm productive has become a story of growth, resilience, and farming without limits.
Barely a year after commissioning its automated seed packaging line, Value Seeds Limited is demonstrating how strategic investments in agriculture can improve smallholder farmers access to quality inputs such as climate-adapted seeds, expand market access, and facilitate sustainable agricultural markets across Nigeria.
In Kachia Local Government (Kaduna, Nigeria) where the roads stretch wide into rural pastoral communities, one woman moves from one ruga (Fulani cattle settlement) to another with a vaccine carrier as her companion. Her name is Queen Victoria Isaac, a Veterinary Paraprofessional (VPP) whose courage and commitment are reshaping perceptions of women as animal health service providers in traditionally male-dominated pastoral communities.
Following the removal of fuel subsidies in Nigeria in May 2023, petrol prices rose by approximately 226% by December 2023, with average retail prices rising from around N206.19 in December 2022 to over N671.86 per litre, marking the end of government-subsidised fuel prices. This severely affected smallholder farmers who depend on petrol-powered irrigation systems. In Banjiram Community of Guyuk LGA, Adamawa State, the economic pressure threatened production levels and household livelihoods.
For over 20 years, Baba Maurison Gilbert has relied on both rainy and dry seasons, and his own determination, to farm in the Banjiram Community of Guyuk LGA of Adamawa State. But while wet season farming came with its own challenges like flooding, erratic rain
patterns, and drought, it was the dry season that truly tested his resolve. The cost of maintaining fuel-powered
irrigation pumps, his only option for watering crops, turned farming into a costly battle for survival.
Propcom+ supports climate-resilient and sustainable agriculture that benefits people, climate, and nature by stimulating pro-poor climate-resilient growth in selected rural markets. It works as a ‘market facilitator’, identifying constraints in market systems and facilitating changes to enable rural markets to work better for the benefit of poor and climate-vulnerable smallholder farmers and rural small-scale entrepreneurs.
This note responds to a request for a concise summary showing how selected Propcom+ interventions help farmers adapt to climate change and become more resilient.
Smallholder farmers in Adamawa State have long faced low yields and worsening climate challenges due to limited access to quality seeds and affordable agricultural technologies.
When Linda John talks about farming today, her voice carries confidence and pride. But that wasn’t always the case. Growing up in Kabua LGA, Bida Bidi community of Kaduna state Linda watched her parents work long hours on the farm and decided early on that agriculture was not for her.
