Food Systems Transformation Takes Centre Stage as Propcom+ Facilitates the 2025 Nutritious Food Fair in Kano, Nigeria

Kano, Nigeria | October 16, 2025

As the world marks World Food Day 2025 under the theme “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future,” Propcom+ is spotlighting the vital role of nutritious and climate-smart foods in transforming Nigeria’s food systems.

The 2025 Nutritious Food Fair, facilitated by Propcom+ in collaboration with the Kano State Government and HarvestPlus, brought together key players across Nigeria’s food value chains — from policymakers and private sector actors to processors, seed companies, aggregators, farmer groups, and the media. The fair served as a platform to promote innovation, strengthen partnerships, and celebrate progress in the journey toward food security and improved nutrition.

Driving Transformation Through Partnerships

Speaking at the event, Dr Adiya Ode, Political Director, Propcom+, highlighted the programme’s commitment to driving food systems transformation through inclusive market approaches and strategic partnerships.

“We believe that the path to sustainable food security lies in collaboration — bringing together public and private sectors, innovators, and communities to deliver better foods for better futures,” she said.

Over the past year, Propcom+ has worked closely with partners to promote improved and nutrient-dense varieties such as Vitamin A maize, Orange-Fleshed Sweet Potato, and Iron Pearl Millet. These crops are not only vital to addressing hidden hunger but also serve as climate-smart solutions for smallholder farmers adapting to changing weather conditions.

Celebrating Innovation and Impact

The fair featured exhibitions from food processors, farmers’ cooperatives, and agribusinesses showcasing various food products. Participants also explored innovative approaches to food fortification, value addition, and market integration that enable smallholders to access profitable and resilient markets.

Representing the Kano State Governor, the Honourable Commissioner for Health commended the initiative, noting that:

“This collaboration reflects our commitment to building a food-secure Nigeria where nutrition and livelihoods thrive hand in hand. We are proud to partner with Propcom+ and HarvestPlus in scaling up improved varieties and expanding opportunities for smallholder farmers.”

Transforming Markets, Nourishing Lives

Through our market systems approach, we are strengthening private sector participation in the nutrition value chain: from seed companies and aggregators to processors and retailers. By facilitating access to finance, technology, and knowledge, the programme continues to unlock opportunities that enable smallholders to increase productivity and income while ensuring households have access to healthier diets.

The Nutritious Food Fair reaffirms our vision of a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable food system where every action — from farm to fork — contributes to prosperity, progress, and partnership.
