Smallholder farmers are on the frontline of climate change.

Depleted water sources, reduced biodiversity and degraded soils and ecosystems significantly reduce agricultural land productivity and expose poor farmers to more shocks.

We are an eight-year climate-smart rural agricultural programme funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. We are improving the resilience of smallholders and small-scale entrepreneurs to climate change while increasing their productivity and incomes, reducing GHG emissions and maintaining natural ecosystems.

We are building on a legacy…

In 2021, Propcom Mai-Karfi, one of FCDO’s most successful and longest-running market systems development programme closed-out, celebrating a decade of positive impact in Northern Nigeria.

Propcom legacy programmes pioneered climate-smart agriculture (CSA) interventions, introduced innovative business models, and helped to transform market systems in northern Nigeria. Propcom+ represents both a logical evolution of Propcom Mai-Karfi as well as an exciting opportunity to reframe, refresh and reimagine the strategy and vision for the next generation.

Programme Approach

Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) is a key opportunity to increase incomes, enhance resilience, tackle the underlying drivers of conflict and reduce emissions in poor and fragile parts of Nigeria. Thus, our portfolio of interventions aims to facilitate innovative climate-smart business models that empower smallholders and SMEs to build resilience, reduce emissions and increase their yield.

Pillar 1 – Scaling Proven Climate-smart Agriculture Markets

We are scaling a focused basket of Proven climate-smart interventions around agricultural and primary processing/storage practices and models to get these adopted by millions of poor and vulnerable smallholder farmers and small-scale entrepreneurs.

Interventions:

  1. Scaling last mile delivery of vaccines through CAHW/VPP model
  2. Scaling community seed multiplication models
  3. Scaling rural seed promoters model
  4. Increasing vaccine supply
  5. Aggregation and off-take of biofortified crop varieties
  6. Marketing and development of atypical channels for biofortified and fortified food products
  7. Scale up fee-based digital extension services and bundling with financial services

Pillar 2 – Piloting/Building New Markets

We are developing and Piloting new business models that improve productivity, enhance resilience to climate change, reduce emissions, and improve nutrition outcomes.

Interventions:

  1. Piloting the Sustainable Rice Intensification (SRI) model
  2. Piloting catalytic CSA innovations and technologies
  3. Agroforestry and sustainable land use

Pillar 3 – Enabling Policies

We support the strengthening of an enabling environment for sustainable food and land-use systems.

Interventions:

  1. Strengthen institutional capacity for Poultry and Livestock routine vaccination
  2. Institutional reforms for sustainable land use (forestry management)
  3. Review of selected State agricultural policy
